The Department of Pediatric Oncology for 40 beds (including 22 for children and 18 for their parents) was opened on the basis of the Kyiv City Oncology Hospital according to the order of the Kyiv City Hospital No 466 of 30.12.1998.
The Department of Pediatric Oncology of Kyiv City Clinical Oncology Center is a medical diagnostic and organizational and methodological center. It is responsible for treatment, dispensary observation, rendering advisory services to children, and also conducts informational and methodological work with pediatricians in Kiev polyclinics and hospitals.
During a year 650 children are treated in the Department of Pediatric Oncology of KCCOC.
The Department of Pediatric Oncology is an independent unit of Kyiv City Clinical Oncology Center and is directly subordinate to the Chief Physician. In 1998- 2000, the department was headed by S.A. Savchuk. From 2001 to the present time the head of the department is the children’s oncologist of the superior expert category Olga Fedorivna Matyushok.
Children’s oncology department meets modern requirements in medical institutions of this type. The department carries out chemotherapeutic, surgical treatment, radiation therapy and rehabilitation of children with malignant neoplasms. The treatment is conducted in accordance with the requirements of the latest protocols for the provision of medical care in the specialty “oncology”, the recommendations of ESMO 2009, the European Musculo-Skeletal Oncology Society (EMSOS 2009), the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP-2009). Also, anti-relapse treatment and palliative chemotherapy and radiation therapy are conducted. The discussions on the treatment of non-prototypical patients are being constantly carried out with leaders of cooperative research groups, leading experts from Germany, Italy, the USA and Russia. For the first time among the CIS countries, a study of genetic tumor markers in children was conducted to determine the treatment tactics in accordance with the requirements of the protocol of German Pediatric Oncology (GPO). It has been mastered to carry out high-dosage chemotherapy, including high-dose methotrexate, chemotherapy support therapy. The spectrum of surgical interventions covers diseases of the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space, chest, musculoskeletal system, skin. Modern concervative surgery procedures are applied, cosmetic surgery standards are observed. For the first time among the CIS the standard in the planning of surgical interventions to determine the preoperative effectiveness of treatment, including the use of dynamic MRI, has been exploited by the department.
Currently, the department has 3 children oncologists, 1 surgeon for children, 11 nurses, 13 assistant nurses.
