The radiological department of open isotopes has become a part of Kyiv City Clinical Oncology Center since 1990. The department is designed for 12 active beds and occupies the 5th floor of the radiological building.
The patients of the department are treated with radiopharmaceuticals: patients with cancer of the lactic and prostate gland with multiple metastases in the bone are treated with radioactive phosphorus-32, samarium-oxobiophore (153St), metastron (89SrCl2) and patients with thyroid cancer are treated with radioactive iodine-131 after surgery and in case of secondary metastases to the lymph nodes of the neck, mediastinum, lungs, bones.
The use of radioactive iodine-131 is the only radical treatment for papillary and follicular forms of thyroid cancer. Thanks to the work of the department, timely and combined treatment with radioactive iodine- 131 of such patients in the postoperative period is ensured, followed by recovery and the possibility to continue a full-fledged life. During the year, about 85 patients with breast cancer, about 75 patients with prostate cancer and more than 200 patients with thyroid cancer are treated in the department.
